Volcanoes and earthquakes are similar but different at the same time.

Similarities:

*Caused by tectonic plate movement

*Usually cause a lot of damage

*Almost always very dangerous

Differences:

*When an earthquake happens it can literally make a volcano erupt

*Cause different types of damage EX: Volcanoes burn stuff and earthquakes destroy it

*Vary in sizes

Volcanoes and earthquakes have a lot in common. Volcanic eruptions are caused by the tectonic plates shifting and that also can cause an earthquake.

But the difference is the violence. Earthquakes are fairly violent, but volcanoes do more than just cause buildings to fall. They melt stuff and blast through it with gas!

Compare:

1.) They are both natural disasters.

2.) They can kill people.

3.) They are linked to plate tectonics.

4.) Sometimes, they happen together.

Contrast:

1.) In the Hong Kong Observatory, there is no earthquake warning but there is tsunami warning.

2.) There is only one way which triggers an earthquake, but there are several ways that triggers a tsunami.

3.) Earthquake destroy buildings, tsunamis don't.

4.) Earthquakes are measured in Richter scale while tsunami is measured in tsunami scale.

5.) Tsunami comes from a Japanese word meaning "harbor wave".

6.) Earthquakes are mostly unpredictable, but tsunamis are sometimes predictable.

7.) Earthquakes vary in intensity while tsunamis vary in height.

8.) It's difficult to escape an earthquake but it's sometimes easy to escape a tsunami.

9.) Earthquakes are considered as the modest.

Trivia:

Cp3.) Tsunamis aren't directly linked to plate tectonics but they form when a plate disaster occur undersea.

Cp4.) When they happen together, that means tsunami is triggered by the undersea earthquake.

Ct2.) Not only undersea earthquakes triggers tsunami, also severe undersea landslide, asteroid impact, severe undersea volcano or an undersea nuclear explosion can also trigger a tsunami.

Ct3.) Earthquakes are stronger than buildings but buildings are stronger than tsunami. Whenever the tsunami hits land, the building acts like a strong shield that will cut through the tsunami like what the wind-breaker does to the wind but the aftermath is a flash flood.

Ct6.) Tsunamis can be predicted in several ways like where the earthquake currently occurs.

Ct8.) When a tsunami is approaching, the tsunami warning will be issued which gives people time to get away from the shoreline. Although tsunami kills people, it doesn't destroy buildings, so people can seek indoors even though it's close to the shore.

Ct9.) After an earthquake occurs, it's very difficult for the land to recover like radioactive waste.

Ct3.) Earthquakes are stronger than buildings but buildings are stronger than tsunamis. When a tsunami hits land, the building acts like a strong shield that cuts through the tsunami like what a wind-breaker does to the wind.

Ct5.) There is a slight misnomer with it. Tsunamis are types of wave but it doesn't always have to occur in a harbor.

Ct6.) Tsunamis can be predicted when meteorologists check where there's an undersea earthquake.

Ct8.) If a tsunami is racing towards the shore, the tsunami warning will be issued, so that it gives time for people to get away from the shore. When a tsunami hits land, the building acts like a strong shield that cuts through the tsunami like what a wind-breaker does to the wind.

Ct9.) It's very difficult to recover the earthquake damage, especially strong earthquakes.

Why are tsunamis associated with earthquakes?

Well, earthquakes do cause tsunamis. But only underwater earthquakes. Plus, they have to be a transform plate boundary earthquake(caused by subduction).Any displacement of water will cause a tsunami. In short, some underwater earthquakes cause tsunamis.
