What social problems arise from religion?

Most religious people try to live their lives in harmony with others, without contributing to social problems. Nevertheless, religions have given rise to social problems down throught the centuries.

We can think of Catholics who have been forbidden from marrying Protestants. Christians and Muslims who believe that their respective religions forbid them to marry and thus force them to give up their chance for happiness.

We can think of civil war and fighting between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland, between Christians and Muslims in Lebanon, and between Jews and Muslims in Israel and the Palestinian territories.

We can think of exclusive Christian sects that discourage their members from having friends outside the Church, and which can cut a dissident member adrift without friends or emotional support.

We can think of Christian Churches that seek to impose their own values on those who do not share their views, to their detriment. And we can think of Muslims who wish to have Sharia law imposed on all Muslims, and according to their strict interpretation of Sharia law.
