Nikita Khrushchev was the leader of the Soviet Union when the Berlin Wall was built.Joseph Stalin had been the leader when the borders were closed, but construction of the wall itself did not begin until August 13, 1961.

the Berlin Wall started off as a 40cm high barbed wire fence erected secretly on the night of the 12th of august 1961(the 1st generation wall) it was ordered by the soviet leader Khrushchev to stop people fleeing the communist east to the capitalist west

the American president Kennedy said "its not a very nice situation but a wall is one hell of a lot better than a war"
