When this question was originally asked, Mr. Obama was still a senator from Illinois. Although he was born in Hawaii, he never ran for office from that state. He moved to Illinois in the mid-1980s, and represented the Chicago area in the state legislature; when he became a US senator, he was a senator from Illinois. And even as president, he and Michelle still have a home in Chicago and they go back there sometimes to visit friends.
