A lot of people automatically think that Arizona would have a desert, but not Alaska - and they would be wrong.

Both would have deserts. Arizona has hot ones, and Alaska, a cold one (Arctic desert at Kobuk Valley National Park).

A desert does not have to be hot. The actual definition is a region so arid because of little rainfall that it supports only sparse and widely spaced vegetation or no vegetation at all.
