Alaska could be the highest state because Mount McKinley is the highest point in the United States. Colorado has the highest mean elevation of any state, which could also be considered a candidate for highest state. So technically they both can be considered correct answers. It just depends if you mean the highest point in a state(Alaska) or the highest mean altitude for a state(Colorado).

Depending on the reference used, it is one of three locations in Colorado state.

The highest "city" is Leadville, Colorado at an elevation of 10152 feet (3094 m)

(2010 pop. 2,821)

The highest "town" is Alma, Colorado at an elevation of 10578 feet (3224 m).

(2010 pop. 179)(see below)

The highest "major city" is Denver, Colorado at an elevation of 5280 feet (1609 m)

(2010 pop. 554,636)

---

Colorado has arcane legal distinctions between a "town" and a "city" (more than 2,000 residents qualify as the latter). Leadville, therefore, at 10,152 feet (according to the signs at the town limits) is the highest-elevation "city." Alma is the highest "town." Montezuma, CO, at 10,400 feet, is the second-highest town. (Contrary to some reports, Alma and Montezuma are both incorporated.) This situation gets complicated because there is no set standard to exactly where in a town an elevation is measured. Leadville's elevation is measured from the steps of the old town hall. Alma's is measured from the cemetery above town, where there was already an established USGS marker. Since there is no set definition, the town of Winter Park (pop. 662) may very well claim itself as the highest town in the US. Its town limit includes a ski area at up to 12060 feet in elevation.
