The word bayou was first recorded used by the French in Louisiana. Bayou is thought to originate from the Choctow Indian word bayuk which means "small stream".

A bayou is a body of water that can be a slow moving river or stream. they are most commonly found in very low lying areas and usually contain brackish water. Some well know bayous in Louisiana include Cypress Bayou, Buffalo Bayou, Bayou Bartholomew, and Bayou La Batre.

Louisiana is a state that is filled with swamps, bayous, rivers, estuaries, creeks, etc. This along with warm temperatures is the perfect habitat for alligators which van be found in most parts of the state. It is a large intelligent animal that seems to adapt to new situations and is therefore honored by the state.

They are called bayous. Bogs typically get all of their water from rain and are created by sphagnum moss buildup over existing ponds or dry land that becomes saturated with rain - they are stagnant, peat-filled depressions. Bayous (like in Louisiana) are marshy outlets or offshoots of lakes or rivers (i.e. they have very slow moving water that is fed from a larger water source).
