Illinois has a land border with five states that are Missouri, Kentucky, Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin - as well as a water border with Michigan (across Lake Michigan).

Illinois is the 21st state admitted to the United States of America. Small industrial cities and great agricultural productivity in central and western Illinois, and natural resources like coal, timber, and petroleum in the south, Illinois has a broad economic base. Illinois is located in the north central portion of the United States, and it is bordered to the north by Wisconsin, to the east by Indiana and Lake Michigan, to the southest by the Ohio River and Kentucky and to the west by the Mississippi River and Missouri and Iowa.
