The police will make a report and forward it to the department of family and youth services or child protective services. The agency with jurisdiction will investigate the alledged incident and if "just cause" is found the case will be sent to the prosecutor's office for a decision on what, if any criminal charges will be filed. In most cases the investigating agency will remove the minor child(ren) from the family home and place them in protective custody until the investigation is completed. If charges are filed against the parent, a court hearing will take place to determine what action should be taken to insure the wellbeing and safety of the minor child(ren). That can mean placement in a foster or group home or with another acceptable family member.
