The German economy was almost completely destroyed by the end of World War 1. Hitler became chancellor in 1933 when Von Papen convinced Hindenburg. He made a rule and if he could get people to vote for it it would be put into use. The rule was "Hitler can rule above for four years. There is no need to consult the Reinchstag." His rule was put into use and he started to make laws. He banned all other political party's. Also anyone who stood against him or he saw as a potential threat was put into a concentration camp. The SA was a group of stormtroopers Hitler organised to protect him. But some of the members threatened him so he arranged for them to be killed. This was called "the night of the long knives." Over 1000 SA members were found dead with knives in their backs. When president Hindenburg died it gave Hitler the chance to combine the role of chancellor and president. He called himself "Der Fuhrer." He made every soldior swear an oath of loyalty to him. They then had to do everything he told them to. By swearing the oath of loyalty to him it also meant that they would betray their country.

Hitler was able to establish a totalitarian regime in Germany through violence and persuasion. He persuaded the passing of the Enabling Law, allowing him to pass any laws he wanted. He had killed the SS army and Ernst Rohm without trial to ensure that he made certain supporters happy.

At the time that Hitler came to power, Germany was governed under rules set out in the Constitution of the Weimar Republic.

In the late 1920's and early 1930's, the National Socialist (Nazi) party started gaining more seats in the Bundestag (similar to House of Representatives). They had enough seats that they could force a new election any time they wanted it. Each time they did this, they gained more seats.

In 1932, the Nazi party was the largest party in the Bundestag. President Hindenburg was pressured into appointing Hitler as Chancellor of Germany, the second highest office in the country. Hindenburg died in 1933. The normal procedure at the time would have been a new election. Instead, Hitler convinced the Bundestag to pass a motion making him ruler for life. The Bundestag then voted itself out of existance, leaving Hitler as a dictator with no oversight.

The notion that Hitler could do no good extends to his economics as it does, Two days after taking office as Chancellor, Hitler addressed the nation.

Also:

In 1934, Hitler purged the S.A. to insure the support of the Army. After Hindenburg died, his son claimed that his father wanted Hitler to be his successor as President. With this endorsement, Hitler easily won election to the Office of President ( Head of State ) As Chancellor, Hitler was only the head of the government. Now holding both offices he consolidated them into one, that being the one of Chancellor. Thus with 2 major steps he was now legally in control of State & Government.
