The lynch mob is discouraged by Scout and Jem who show up outside the jail cell where Atticus is acting as a guard for Tom Robinson. The lynch mob is set on getting their hands on Tom Robinson, but are made to change their minds when Scout directly confronts Walter Cunningham's father. She uses no violence or harsh language to prevent the attack, but simply asks Mr. Cunningham a lot of questions that makes the whole lynching party back down.

Scout tells Mr Cunningham that she had his boy Walter over for dinner one night. And since Cunninghams don't take anything they can't repay, Mr Cunningham repays her by makeing the lynch mob back off.

Aticus is guarding the jailhouse in case a mob shows up. Scout, Jem and Dill show up at the jail house, and Scout sees Mr. Cunninham the father of one of her classmates and has a conversation with him, he fells bad he's about kids being there and seeing whats going on, so calls off the mob.
