Originally 'Mustang Sally' was a hit by Wilson Pickett in 1966. It was a part of a genera of music commonly called 'soul music' or 'R&B' ( rhythm and blues ). A Wikipedia search for either will link you to a wealth of info on the subject. A bit of trivia about the songs 'Hold On, I'm Comin' and 'Soul Man' by the Blues Brothers. They were first recorded by Sam and Dave, who shared the same record labels, recording studios, and studio musicians as Pickett.
