Protons and neutrons are found in the atomic nucleus of any atom except the hydrogen atom where there is a single proton. Bothneutrons and protons in turn, are made up of quarks. Electrons orbit the nucleus.

The nucleus is made up of protons (positive charge) and neutrons (no charge), which are in turn made up of up and down quarks (proton is up up down, neutron is up down down). The quarks are held together by the strong force, which is carried by gluons, while the protons and neutrons themselves are bound by the weak force (carried by W and Z bosons).

Protons and Neutrons. Protons have a positive electric charge of 1+, while Neutrons have no electric charge because they are neutral. Most of the mass of an atom is found in the nucleus, whilst most of the volume are taken up by the tiny electrons surrounding the nucleus. Electrons have a relative mass of only 1, whilst the relative mass of a Proton is: 1836 and a Neutron is: 1837. Electrons have a negative electric charge of 1-. Subatomic particles are : Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons.
