A sub genre of what? A genre can be called a grouping of things based on like characteristics. Therefore, in films, Horror is a genre, wherein the subset of films contained in that genre are scary. Slasher Horror is a sub-genre of Horror, wherein the subset of films in the subgenre are films that are scary and focus on a villain/monster/antagonist that kills or injures his victims with some sharp, slashing instrument. A poem could be considered a subset of writing, however, applying the word sub-genre would not be the clearest way to define it.
