It depends on the type of cell. It also depends on the type of energy. In animals, Mitochondria convert oxygen to food. Plants also use mitochondria, but they also have chloroplasts which use light energy and turn it into sugars, which plants use as food, energy, and growth material! Animals use it as just energy.

Without these nutrients, the other organs would eventually shut down and die. The body does have the capability to convert energy from fat cells for use in the rest of the body.
