In the 1985 NCAA tournament, Villanova was seeded 8th in the Southeast region. They defeated #9 Dayton, #1 Michigan, #5 Maryland, and #2 North Carolina to make it to the Final Four. They then defeated Memphis State in the semifinals and Georgetown in the finals to win the 1985 championship.
Since the NCAA Men's basketball tournament expanded to 64 teams, only once have all four top seeds made it. It was the 2008 final four in San Antonio, which included Kansas (beat Davidson in Elite 8), North Carolina (defeated Louisville in Elite 8), Memphis (defeated Texas in elite 8), and UCLA (defeated Xavier in Elite 8). Kansas defeated Memphis in the Chamionship game in Overtime.
In 1975 Indiana finished the regular season 29-0, but lost to Kentucky in the Mideast Regional final.

In 1955, district five tournament selectors had to name two independents to fill out the tournament bracket. Since only two independent teams existed in the district, both Bradley (7-19) and Oklahoma City (9-17) were named to the tournament. Bradley defeated Oklahoma City, 69-65, and SMU, 81-79, before losing to Colorado, 93-81, in the Midwest Regional final. (This rule was changed for the following season.)
