As the Confederate army in Virginia was facing the overwhelming force of Union troops in Virginia, Lieutenant General Robert E. Lee was running out of troops and food for his Army of Northern Virginia. He saw little hope by continuing to wage war in Virginia. Union victories in early 1865 had placed Lee in no position to carry on the fight. In April he took US Grant's offer to surrender without the South having to suffer anymore losses. He surrendered his army to Grant at the Appomattox Court House in Virginia. The date was April 9, 1865.Confederate President Jefferson Davis wanted to continue the war. He still had a large army under General Johnston. Ultimately Johnston saw that surrendering to General Sherman was the best way to save lives and to end the war. Johnston surrendered on April 26, 1865.
Most of the terms were covered by the president Lincoln. Who was shot 5 days after the war ended.
Grant will give them food and let them go back home. i got my answer from a civil war book. its not what is said above! This is what the terms really were: "Grant's terms were generous. The Confederate soldiers had to lay down their arms, but then were free to go home."

Japan did NOT offer to surrender before the two atom bombs were dropped. It wasn't until AFTER the two bombs had been dropped and Russia's entrance into the war against Japan that Japan surrendered.

The North's greatest victory during the Civil War, would be the surrender of the South, through its commander Robert E. Lee. The two commanders met at Appomattox Court House, on April 9, 1865. Grant allowed the Confederate soldiers to return home, surrendering only their arms and artillery. Lee did not offer his sword in defeat; Grant did not ask for it. Five days later, President Lincoln was shot while attending a play at Ford's Theater. It was a tragic ending to a tragic war.
