I need more detail to answer your question properly. Like what type of wood the deck is made out of, how old the deck is, & whether it's been painted or stained before? Most people prefer to use stain over paint and with stain you have two options, solid or semi-transparent stain. Solid stains tend to hide more like discoloration in different parts of your deck as well as protect the wood better because it is thicker than semi's. On the other hand semi-transparent deck stains are usually nicer looking making the wood look richer. Also semi's fade away over time especially with Direct sunlight exposure so they are easier to recoat after a few years. Also, a lighter cooler will reflect more of the sunlight back, resulting in a cooler surface to walk on in bare feet around the pool. 100% acrylic floor paint can also be used, but it will fill in the texture faster since it doesn't build up as fast as a stain will. Again, if the tests showed that there was an existing xylene-based coating and xylene coatings are still available in your area, use the xylene-based coating to avoid peeling in the future.
If you are painting a driveway, make sure that the paint you are using can withstand hot tire heat.
