This is a familiar compound usually known as table salt. It is soluble in water. It is part of human bio-chemistry and is a necessary part of our diet. But too much in the diet can lead to high blood pressure. Technically it is an ionic compound, which dissociates into the sodium ion and the chloride ion when dissolved in water. It is a white crystalline material when not dissolved, when dissolved it is colorless.
