The title of the book is "The Gray Ghost." The signification of the title is it scared Scout before her father started to read it to her, but after he started to read it she wasn't so scared. This is the same thing with Boo. She was afraid of Boo until she met him. Once they had met and she realized how nice he was she wasn't so scared anymore.

The mockingbird mainly represents Tom Robinson. Mr. Underwood's article in his newspaper said he thought the same thing. Tom was innocent but he was killed. It is stated early in the book that to kill a mockingbird is believed to be a sin. And the townspeople, because of their prejudice, condemn Tom despite the strong evidence that he committed no crime.

Some people would also say Boo Radley, because he's an innocent person who does nothing wrong but he is made fun of and rumored about and such, which is in a way like a mockingbird being killed; sad and not right.

The Gray Ghost is one of a series of children's adventure books written in the 1920s and early 30's about a fun-loving gang of kids who have adventures and meet interesting folks.

At the end of To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus begins to read The Gray Ghost to Scout, and she describes an incident in one of books, in which a character called Three-Finger Pete ( a character not unlike Boo Radley, who was suspected of being weird, bad and a thief) was not really bad at all, but a very nice person, Atticus remarks that most people are, when you get to know them. That's the message that Harper Leewanted to leave with her readers, and using The Gray Ghost was a very appropriate choice, considering the time and setting of the novel.

When Harper Lee was growing up, her brother had a set of the books, and she borrowed them and read them many times over.
