The first part of the word means joint. The ending, "itis" refers to inflammation. So Arthritis is the inflammation of a joint. Quite often, there are bone spurs found within joints that have arthritis though not all joints that have bone spurs cause pain. There are a variety of causes and types of arthritis. Some of these causes and types have to do with overuse, the normal aging process, and/or auto immune disorders.
