The three people that helped unify Italy are:
Mazzinni (the soul)
Cavour (the brain)
Garibaldi (the sword)
Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882). Garibaldi was a liberal nationalist - revolutionary and anti-clerical. He was one of the leading Italian revolutionaries and played a key role in overthrowing the King of the Two Sicilies in 1860. In May 1860 he landed with 1,000 men at Marsala in western Sicily. (The group is often referred to as 'the Thousand' - in Italian, 'I Mille').
Soon after landing at Marsala this small band was joined by others; they took Palermo and Messina and then crossed the Straits of Messina to the Italian mainland. Later he advanced into the Papal States. The Pope asked France for military help, which was given by Napoleon III.
The second is Cavour, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Sardinia (which included Piedmont). Italian unification (except in the south) depended heavily on the military action by Sardinia. Cavour came from a noble conservative family and yet was open to accepting liberal ideals. He applied Realpolitik to help unify Italy. He also helped support Garibaldi financially. He succeeded in removing the Austrian power from both Lombardy and Vienna.
Lastly is Mazzini, he founded Young Italy, a group of literal Young Italians who attempted to unify Italy by spreading the message of nationalism. He was inspired by the ideas and policies of the early Roman Empire and eventually created an empire modeled after the Roman Republic. Acting as the "soul" he inspired Garibaldi's excursions.
