Studies show that usually kids between 3-5 years old need about 12 hours of sleep, and kids between 5-10 years usually need 10 hours of sleep. So a 5 year old should go to sleep about 11 hours before he/she wakes up. (Maybe a little bit more, because the wont fall asleep promptly after going to bed.)
The average time 5 year old children should go to bed is 4:45-5:30pm. A recent scientific study proved this information with identical twins. One child went to bed at 5:00pm and was woken up at 7:00am. The other went to bed at 7:00 and was woken up at 7:00am. The children were then asked to participate in a number of tests including a reading test, sports test and puzzles test. Presumably, the child that went to bed earlier's results were much higher that the child who went to bed at an extremely late time.
