What should you do if your fish is not eating?

It is perfectly normal for a new fish not to eat for the first few days. In fact, you shouldn't even offer food until the fish has been in the aquarium for at least 24 hours. Since any uneaten food will just foul the water unless it is removed. If after 3-4 days the fish still will not accept food, start looking for signs of disease and have the water quality checked by an aquarium/pet store, specifically test for Ammonia and Nitrite. Other signs of disease in Goldfish include (but are not limited to) small white spots, red streaks in the fins, rapid gill movement/lethargic, red inflamed gills, cloudy eyes, damaged ("rotting") fins, or white/gray film on the body.

Also, if you put some garlic in (just a tiny tiny bit) it makes goldfish hungry. Check your fish's eyes as well he might have gone blind therefor he will not be able to see the food.

Pellets can cause your fish to swallow air which will get caught up in their bladder forcing them to swim uncomfortably and can cause their death. The flakes are the safest bet but if you feel like you can also add lettuce and Oranges to their diet.

Healthy goldfish will always be hungry, for one to have a lack of appetite could only mean one thing; he/she is sick. Examine the fish closely- look for any signs of illness: is its abdomen looking larger than normal? are there white spots or open sores covering their body? are they acting lethargic? Figuring out what symptoms your fish is exhibiting is the first step to getting your fish better. Since the causes of a fish not eating are usually bacterial I'd start the fish, just as a precaution, on a medicated antibiotic food.
