you go to the doctors and get it cut off . or you just soak it in a bunch of hot water and epson salt everyday and put some cottonballs underneath your toenail. i went with the cut it off and it didnt even hurt i recommend that.

I have learned to do it on my own. I have succeded doing this about 3 times and I have had to go to the doctor twice. You HAVE to catch it early or you will probably have to go to the doctor and pay for it. What you do is get a nail clipper with the little long blade in it. CAREFULLY push it between the nail and the infection. Move it back and forth until either pus comes out or nail pieces come out. Clean it up and make sure you squeeze all the pus out. If you get all the pus out you can, it should stop the pain somewhat. Now, with your index finger, hold the toe and with your thumb, pull the infection in the direction off your toe. With your other hand, put the nail clipper blade inside and try to get it underneath the nail, this will be extremely difficult if your nail is too short, and it is very painful, especially on the first try. If you get the blade under the nail, pull the nail up slightly and slide it up and down the nail to try and lift it above the infection. Repeat this process for a couple days or more if needed. Like I said, if you catch it early on, it is much easier to fix. Make sure you clean your toe, nail clipper, and hands very well when you are done. It also makes it much easier to do this after soaking the toe in warm water mixed with episom salt for 30 minutes, but I just do it after I take a shower. Sometimes it is just too late to fix it on your own. Doing this relieves the pain later in the day as well.

Soak it in Epsom salt and warm water so the nail can get soft. I would then try to cut it off, but that's just me.

If it's really bad then go get it checked out by a doctor.

Speaking from experience, go to a foot doctor and have the ingrown toe nail removed professionally. The doctor will do this procedure the right way. Doing it yourself can risk infection and the nail will continue to return. The doctor will use novacaine, so you will not feel the pain and he will cut down part of the infected nail (not the whole nail) and he will pull the impacted area out. The nail must be removed, along with the impacted root beneath the skin, or else it will come back. It sounds worse than what it is, but it will work.

If it is really bad then you will have to get your docter to cut it out before it gets worse. Otherwise you can try pulling it out allthough it will hurt a lot! Sometimes if they are minor they go away on their own. To prevent it don't cut your toenails too short.

Soaking your feet 4 times a day in warm water can help an ingrown toenail, as it can soften the nail so that it becomes less painful.

Make sure you keep your toe clean and keep a dressing on it if the skin is broken. The best sort of dressing are non lint ones which will not stick to the skin. This will help reduce the risk of infection, as if it becomes infected you will need to seek the attention of your podiatrist who may be able to offer you anti-biotics to reduce the infection.

Ingrown toenail's often re-occur, it is best to seek professional treatment from your GP or a podiatrist.

If you are beyond self treatment because an infection has started to set in then you need to book an appointment to see a podiatrist as soon as possible. In the case of a minor infection your podiatrist may be able to prescribe some antibiotics and bandage the toe properly so that the toenail is not pressing on the skin. However if the toenail is causing extreme pain and the swelling and infection are really bad, the doctor may have to perform surgery on the toe to remedy the situation. This could mean having some or all of the toenail or surrounding skin cut and removed.

Why do ingrown toenails hurt?

Ingrown toenails hurt because what is happening is that your toenail is penetrating the skin. when anything penetrates your skin it will hurt. The toenail will press on nerves in the toe. another reason that it hurts is that it is infected. The way to treat an infected ingrown toenail is to remove the toenail from the opening in the skin with nail trimmers then soak the toe in warm salt water. Hope this helps!!

How do you cut an ingrown toenail?

take a needle go right into the the part of the toenail by the skin, lift the toenail up with the needle and take the nail clippers and cut it back. or in the front of your toenail right in the middle, cut a v shaped figure. the point of the v should be facing up the toenail. this way the toenail will grow toward each other and will prevent ingrown toenails to happen.

Does ingrown toenail surgery hurt?

First, the pediatrist has to use a shot to make your toe numb for when he cuts the ingrown toenail. So the shot doesn't hurt, he will spray some cold spray on it. the cold spray stings a little, but it helps not to feel the shot as much. Yes, that means you will feel the shot but it won't nesessarily hurt. After that, he will do his job in fixing your ingrown toenail.
