When you go to basic, you'll need to bring socks, undergarments, personal hygiene items, and the paperwork you'll bring with you from MEPS.

Over time, depending on what unit you're in, you'll find that certain items may help you in your task, or actually be better than what the military issues. For instance, most soldiers don't use the military "crook neck" flashlights after Basic, instead preferring Mag-Lites and other types of flashlights. The multi-tool is also a popular item (but don't bring one to BCT, because it will be confiscated).

The same kinds civilians have. Exactly what tools they have depends on what their job is - an artilleryman needs different tools than an electrician.

What tools did soldiers use?

I wonder if you mean weapons, rather than tools? The majority of ancient Egyptian infantry soldiers carried a simple spear with a bronze or copper head, plus a shield of wood and cow-hide. Some carried axes or knives as secondary weapons; there were also war-clubs and throwing-sticks. Light troops included archers, slingers and javelin-throwers; these were often mercenary or auxiliary soldiers from conquered or allied nations. Swords were less common, being used mainly by officers, bodyguard units, marines, units of priestly warriors and so on. The links below take you to images of ancient Egyptian soldiers:
