If you want to be respected in the industry by your peers and those in positions of legislation and regulatory power it's a good idea to have completed at least high school and have some back round in the sciences. You need to know how to do good research and understand the meaning of a lot of technical terms in medicine and anatomy.
There are a lot of folks out there who don't have a clue and blindly go off half cocked thinking they are going to be the next best thing in the body piercing industry. But without that ability to understand and comprehend simple anatomical terms and procedures, nor the ability to communicate with inspectors and bylaw people in government in terms they understand, one can come off looking, well stupid. That doesn't help the industry or your efforts at becoming a proficient and respected professional.
There are no actual "requirements" other than being an adult or "in the age of majority" for your area or country, and having certified or verifiable training in the art of body piercing. It's how far you want to go? This is an industry that is always growing, with that the need for more intelligent individuals providing the service is a safe and professional manner. Many professional piercers have medical training or past medical experience, nurses, paramedics, medics etc.
What you should consider. First Aid training and CPR are being held as requirements by most licensing bodies and health inspectors. Blood Borne Pathogens training and certification is also becoming a mandatory requirement in many places by the fore mentioned parties. A proper apprenticeship working under a **senior professional body piercer ( **no less than 10 years of actual hands on piercing experience ) who is in good standing with local governing bodies is a very good idea, actually it's the best method of learning the finer details of the art. Continued education and self education is very important, there are lots of great books out there that will inform and educate from a non partisan angle.
There are always senior professionals out there who will be willing to guide the right person in the right path. Body piercing is a great field, you meet some of the nicest people and yes a few morons as well, but that goes with any field. To be respected is to be open minded but also maintain a level of common sense in the application of new techniques and methods.
Start going to a tattoo shop in your area. Get in good with the piercer. That's how a lot get started.
