A Vision Therapist works under the guidance of an Optometrist. They have usually been trained by the Optometrist in recognizing and treating binocular dysfunctions, accomodative disorders and associated problems, as well as visual perceptual deficiencies and visual disabilities secondary to traumatic brain injury. The therapist uses different techniques including the application of lenses, prisms, computer orthoptics and equipment such as balance boards, walk rails, metronomes etc. Vision therapists often have backgrounds in science, education or psychology. The therapist can only become certified if the doctor they work for is a fellow in the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (they must undergo their own certification to obtain this designation). After extensive on the job training and over 2000 hours of providing vision therapy services the therapist can apply to the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD) to begin the certification process. The process consists of several essay questions, a written exam and oral interview. The process can take up to 4 years to complete. Once certified, the therapist must keep up with regular continuing education requirements and must stay employed by a COVD fellow. There are COVT's (certified Optometric Vision Therapist) located all over the world. When selecting an office for vision therapy it is highly desirable (although not required by law) to be treated by a certified or experienced therapist.
