The Treaty of Tordesillas began the division of the western hemisphere between Spain and Portugal.
The discovery of the West Indies began a period of international dispute between Spain and Portugal. After Columbus first voyage Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand acted quickly to make an international claim to all the lands in the area he had discovered.
Pope Alexander VI in a decree divided the world outside of Europe into two zones
on each side the line which ran 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands.

The South American country of Uruguay has the distinction of being a possession of Portugal, Spain and Brazil. The region of Uruguay was first explored by Portuguese explorers in 1512-1513. Spanish explorers would arrive soon afterwards in 1516. The Spanish and Portuguese would clash over the area until it gained independence from Spain in 1814. In 1821 it was invaded by the Portuguese and annex as part of Brazil. Once Brazil split off from Portugal, Uruguay went with it and was part of the Brazilian Empire until 1828 when it re-gained its independence.

Spain and Portugal subjected their debate over American land claims to Papal intervention and mediation.
