The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (Spanish: Tratado de Guadalupe Hidalgo) is the peace treaty, largely dictated by the United States to the interim government of a militarily occupied Mexico, that ended the Mexican-American War (1846 - 1848). The cession that the treaty facilitated included parts of the modern-day U.S. states of Wyoming, Colorado, Oklahoma and Kansas as well as the whole states of California, Nevada, and Utah, and, depending on one's point of view, Texas.

The remaining parts of what are today the states of Arizona and New Mexico were later peacefully ceded under the 1853 Gadsden Purchase, in which the United States "paid" an additional $10,000,000. Although it was "sold" for that amount (US$258 billion in 2005 terms), in reality it was credited against Mexico's debt towards the United States (see related questions).

The Mexican-American War of 1846-1848 was ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The war officially began with a declaration by the United States of America on May 13, 1846. The Mexican Congress officially responded in kind on July 1, 1846. The war's official end was indicated with the treaty's signing on February 2, 1848. Nicholas Philip Trist [June 2, 1800-February 11, 1874] signed for the United States. Miguel Atristain, Bernardo Couto, and Luis G Cuevas signed for Mexico.

By the treaty, the United States gained 1.36 million square kilometers/525,000 square miles of land. In return, the United States paid Mexico $15 million. Additionally, the United States protected the pre-existing property rights of citizens in the affected lands. The United States also took over $3.25 million of debts that Mexico owed to American citizens.
