What two wars lead to Japan becoming an imperial power?
The First Sino-Japanese War (1894-95) over the control of Korea (where Japan had installed a puppet government).China ended up ceding the island of Formosa and parts of Manchuria to Japan. The war shifted regional dominance from China to Japan.
The Russo-Japanese War (1904-5) - for control of Korea and parts of Manchuria lying between the Russian Empire and Empire of Japan - the first war in which an Asian nation defeated a European power. Along with other Russian losses, this war later enabled Japan to annex Korea (1910). (American President Theodore Roosevelt helped to negotiate the Treaty of Portsmouth which ended the war, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.)
