There were different kinds of government that became more common as the Middle Ages went on. One was the mercantile republic, and the other was the parliamentary monarchy. Examples of republics of the Middle Ages include the Swiss Confederacy and the Republic of Venice. England is a good example of a medieval parliamentary monarchy developing.
