Type of Jew? In that time, many people classified Jews in severeal ways: Cohen (Priest), Levite, Israelite was one. Jesus was an Israelite. This is important to his messianic claim, since a Cohen or Levite was not eligible to be annointed as king. Another division was between Saducees, Pharisees, Zealots and Essenes. Many scholars classify Jesus as closer to the Pharisees than the others because his teachings are closer to those of the Pharisees and because he spent so much time studying with Pharisees, eating with Pharisees, and arguing with Pharisees. (Pharisees spent lots of time arguing with each other, even denouncing each other.)
