For much of the carboniferous the only animals were insects for this was a time of dominance by plants. Towards the end (about 300 million years ago) the early amphibians began to appear ... and at the very end, a few reptiles.

∙ 9y agoThe Carboniferous period of time saw the birth of poisonous centipedes, mammoth cockroaches, dragonflies the size of seagulls, and many species of amphibians. Mammals had yet to evolve during this time in history.

∙ 11y agoYes, there were amphibians. The "carboniferous" consists of the mississipian and pennsylvanian periods. The earliest amphibians, such as acanthostega, evolved during the Devonian. There were also insects.
A fun mnemonic: Campbell's ordinary soups do make people puke. Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Mississipian, Pennsylvanian, Permian. The Carboniferous was the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian periods combined.
Sail backed reptiles, such as dimetrodon, don't appear until the Permian.
Aside from the terrestrial amphibians, the seas were also full of animal life dating back to the Cambrian. All manner of fishes and invertebrate sea life. Trilobites, sponges, jelly fish--exotic beasts long since vanished.

These environmental conditions, with the vast amount of plant material provided by the extensive coal forests, allowed for the production of coal.
