I am doing research for a spanish paper and I have to discuss the Alamo and other spanish colonial buildings. After a bit of research and my knowledge of art history I think I may have figured out what type of architecture the Alamo represents. During the 18th century in Spain the predominant style was spanish baroque, rococo neoclassical etc. After looking at a few different styles I think I can safely say that the Alamo looks to be a hybrid. During the romantic period, orientalism was becoming very popular not only in painting but in architecture as well. The allure of the east had the Conservative Western world burning for the unknown. After some research it seems that this style could have come to the Americas from Spain and mixed with the spanish colonial style which in itself is a hybrid of spanish and indigeneous styles. The spanish style that it most represents is called the mudéjar and neo-mudéjar styles. This in combo with indigeneous styles (due to the different types of material used for building -to accomodate the climate, building materials and functionality of the structure) made what we can witness in the facade of the Alamo and other like structures such as the mission of san carlos borromeo de carmelo in California. This is my best guess at what the Alamo is as far as structural interpretation of style. The mudéjar style, to elaborate, is a hybrid of spanish and arbian/muslem/middle eastern styles (moorish, byzantine etc).
