Oh, you're describing a titmouse! There are two kinds of titmice that this one might be - it mainly depends on where you saw it. If you were back East (Texas north to Minnesota and east to the Atlantic, it was a Tufted Titmouse. If you were out West, Mew Mexico north to Wyoming and west to the Pacific, it was likely the Plain Titmouse.
And if you were somewhere between there...well, it may have been a vagrant, migrating or simply in an overlap area. That's when it gets real fun telling them apart.
