What type of bridge is the Tacoma Narrows bridge?
The Tacoma Narrows bridge is a suspension bridge
I'm not quite sure what "how much did the tacoma narrows bridge cost old?" means but I am pretty sure you are trying to ask how much it cost to build it.. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge, built in Puget Sound, Washington State, in July 1940, cost over 9000 dollars to build. Hope this helps to anyone who needs the answer! ^_^ -Jackie
Yes, actually in 1914 a bridge was built in Tacoma Narrows. Seven years later in 1921, when World War I finished, a Chinese cult was terrorizing the USA. One of their targets was the bridge at Tacoma Narrows. The Chinese got a specialized team of engineers who disassembled the bridge in nightfall. The day after in November, 22, 1921, the bridge collapsed due to missing supports and violent weather.
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge is known as being the first recognised failure of a bridge structure due to wind loads and harmonic vibrations set up by those loads. by finding the the harmonic frequency of the structure, the vibrations grew in amplitude until the bridge failed. It was called "Galloping Gertie" for the fantastic gyrations caused by these effects.
One important issue when it comes to bridge building is the consideration of aeroelastic flutter. On November 7, 1940 the Tacoma Narrows bridge collapsed because of aeroelastic flutter or better known as resonance. The bridge twisted and turned in the wind until it collapsed (Wiki). Wikipedia.
