Capital punishment is essentially synonymous with the death penalty. Though there are varying specific methods that could be used, if the person doesn't eventually die as a result, then it's not capital punishment.

For now, the United States typically use capital punishment for homicide and treason. Earlier on however, capital punishment was applied in a wider amount of crimes such as robbery, burglery, and rape. For minorities, it has been known to be used in just about any form (i.e. talking back to authority, adultery, stealing).
Canada abolished capital punishment in 1976; the last execution was performed on December 11, 1962. Hanging was the only method they used.
Capital punishment in Victorian times was harsh. The era still had hangings but by the time the era was in full swing more transportation to the colonies were carried out as corporal punishments.
