Clint Eastwood said in a recent interview that he brought the cigars from the US & they were called "Virginians" & described them as a strong smoke that put him in a foul mood. He liked them cause the were long & skinny & he would chop them into thirds to fit in his pocket.

Traditional Toscani dry cured cigars (in the vein of DeNobili's) were my guess for a long time due to it being shot in Italy, but alas, this is not the case.

It has long been speculated that what he was smoking was the nub of a Marsh Wheeling cigar ( http://www.broadleafcigars.com/wheeling.htm ) which is probably the most period accurate smoke that you can still buy. They are a 7" x 34 ring smoke & can be considered hearty in comparison to other smokes of it's ilk.

I believe that Clint's "Virginian" brand smoke was any one of the million different Marsh Wheeling style knock off brands that was available in the 1960's. I can't find a Google reference for it, so I am sure the brand is long dead & gone, but Wheeling's still exist if you want the experience.

Clint Eastwood was smoking Toscano cigars in the Spaghetti Westerns directed by Sergio Leone. Expertly and insightfully handmade in Italy, Toscano is a tough cigar for tough people. This cigar has roots that trace all the way back to 1818 when it was first introduced in Lucca, in the Tuscany region of Italy. It is made using fire-cured Kentucky tobacco and has an elliptical shape (thicker midsection with slimmer ends).

Toscano cigars are fire-cured in ovens fueled by oak and beech wood. This process of fire-curing infuses the Toscano cigars with unique flavors and aroma. There are many varieties of Toscano cigars in terms of strength: mild, medium, strong, and this is determined by their respective aging duration - typically between 4 and 12 months.

What made Fist Full of Dollars different from the other movies?

I can't explain this one quickly and easily, but I'll do my best. Fistful of Dollars is a remake of the Japanese movie Yojimbo, directed by Akira Kurosawa. It is about a wandering samurai who comes between two warring families, and he plays them against each other ruthlessly for his own benefit. The same story was later told in a gangster movie called Last Man Standing. Other films have been remade from Kurosawa movies, including Star Wars and The Magnificent Seven, so the connection to Kurosawa does not make Fistful of Dollars unique. Fistful of Dollars was an Italian movie filmed in Spain and directed by Sergio Leone, but it was not the first "Spaghetti Western," although it did popularize the genre in the US. Leone wanted Henry Fonda to play the main character, but Fonda was too expensive, and Charles Bronson was committed to another film, so Clint Eastwood got the part as third choice. [A few years later, Leone made Once Upon a Time in the West starring Fonda as the bad guy and Bronson as the good guy.] Sergio Leone (whom Robert Aldrich had recently fired as second unit director on Sodom and Gomorrah) wanted to make a Western as close to a Hollywood Western as possible, and he was constantly asking Eastwood for advice. However, Eastwood had seen Yojimbo, and he wanted to make an anti-Western in which the good guy is not so good, so he lied to Leone in order to make the movie as different from a Hollywood Western as possible. In conclusion, Fistful of Dollars was not different from previous movies, but it was different from many previous Westerns. Hardcore Western fans were incensed, and Eastwood got an angry phone call from John Wayne, but the movie was a hit and it paved the way for one of America's greatest movie stars and one of Italy's greatest movie directors.
