Hakama (袴) is are a type of traditional Japanese clothing which were originally worn only by men, but today they are worn by both men and women. They are tied at the waist and fall approximately to the ankles, and are traditionally worn over the kimono.
Generally, they wear the same kinds of clothes men in other rich (developed) countries in the same latitudes wear. Some differences you might notice on the streets of Japan today is that few men wear old or worn clothing and that, in formal contexts, a greater percentage of men in Japan wear business suits. Undergarments worn by men, especially those born before 1960 differ slightly from those worn, for example, by men in North America. Underwear in Japan can include a band worn around the abdomen for warmth. This difference, however, probably has more to do with the lack of central heating in Japan and its ubiquity in North America.
