A "generator" usually produces DC current. An "alternator" usually produces AC current. Older cars up to the 1960's used generators.
Newer cars use alternators (simpler design) with diode rectifiers to convert the AC to DC. Batteries are DC.
Some electronic circuitry (inverters) can change DC to AC.
In an alternating current circuit the voltage can be stepped up ordown efficiently with a transformer.

AC alternating current
The typical automobile operates on DC (Direct Current) even though the typical alternator produces AC (Alternating Current) which is then converted to DC.

alternating current (ac)
It depends on the type of power supply. A power supply used in a desktop computer is generally supplied with AC (Alternating Current) and produces several levels of regulated DC (Direct Current) voltages required by the electronic circuits.
