Depends on the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. If it's under 26,000 lbs., you'd need a Class C CDL with the "S" endorsement for school bus (a passenger endorsement plus background check). For the larger ones which gross over 26,000 lbs., you'd need a Class B CDL with "S" endorsement.

∙ 10y agoIn order to drive a school bus in the United States, one must have a commercial driver's license. Each state has their own set of requirements. One of the things one must have is good sight and hearing.

∙ 7y agoIf it has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of less than 26,000 lbs. (e.g., the smaller buses on 1 ton van chassis) and is designed to transport more than 15 persons (including the driver), a Class C CDL with School Bus endorsement (effectively, a passenger endorsement with a background check to ensure you're not a kiddie fondler). If it has a GVW of more than 26,000 lbs., it would require a Class B CDL with school bus endorsement.
You would need to take the General Knowledge, Passenger, and School Bus written tests, as well as Air Brakes if applicable.
