Hopi homes were made from adobe, bricks of baked clay and hay. They built the homes together, much like apartments. They used ladders to reach the upper levels. Often, entire families or clans would live in one adobe structure.

Navajos lived in and sometimes still live in hogans. Hogans are traditionally six or eight sided with the door facing east. They are permanent homes made of logs and earth with a dirt floor and a smoke hole in the roof. Today they are made with a number of construction techniques. There are male and female styles of hogan but most made today are the female style except for sweat lodges which are made the male style. Most things in Navajo thought are gendered; mountains, rivers, rain, colors etc, it does not refer to who lives in them but their nature. Hogans are described in the Navajo creation stories and are necessary for traditional ceremonies.

Traditional Navajo homes are called hogans. Hogans are a type of earth lodge. Hogans are made with a wood framework that is covered with clay. The door always faces east. The thick earthen walls keep the hogan warm in cold weather and cool in warm weather.
