In the 20th century a consensus determined that thunder must begin with a shock wave in the air due to the sudden thermal expansion of the plasma in the lightning channel. The temperature inside the lightning channel, measured by spectral analysis, varies during its 50 μs existence, rising sharply from an initial temperature of about 20,000 K to about 30,000 K, then dropping away gradually to about 10,000 K. The average is about 20,400 K (20,100 °C; 36,300 °F). This heating causes it to expand outward, plowing into the surrounding cooler air at a speed faster than sound would travel in that cooler air. The outward-moving pulse that results is a shock wave, similar in principle to the shock wave formed by an explosion, or at the front of a supersonic aircraft. More recently, the consensus around the cause of the shock wave has been eroded by the observation that measured over-pressures in simulated lightning are greater than what could be achieved by the amount of heating found. Alternative proposals rely on electrodynamic effects of the massive current acting on the plasma in the bolt of lightning.

Why do tornadoes comes in the Earth?

Tornadoes come from the energy released in a thunderstorm. As powerful as they are, tornadoes account for only a tiny fraction of the energy in a thunderstorm.

What two things does a thunderstorm contain?

Electricity and energy.

What is the difference between a thunderstorm and lightning?

Lightning is light energy, or electromagnetic energy. And thunder is sound energy.

Is hail thermal energy?

No. Hail consists of pieces of ice that fall during a thunderstorm. The energy they have is kinetic energy.

Why do tornadoes form by clouds?

Because only the the energy involved in a thunderstorm or developing thunderstorm is enough to form something as strong as a tornado.

Why does air near the Earth's surface have to be moist in order for a thunderstorm to form?

The energy that drives a thunderstorm comes from the latent heat stored in water vapor. This energy is released when the water vapor condenses. If there is not enough moisture then there is not enough energy.

What is the source of energy that fuels a thunderstorm?

heat released from condensing water vapor

3 energy transfers that occur during a thunderstorm?

light,heat,and sound

What is another name for a thunderstorm?

There are many different types of violent windstorms including tornadoes, microbursts, derechos, and hurricanes.

What do you call a severe thunderstorm where a tornado begins?

In most cases the storm the produces a tornado is called a supercell, though in some cases tornadoes can develop in other types of thunderstorm.
