Some forces, such as gravity or the electrostatic force, can act without direct contact. If a force is applied over a certain distance (such as, when an object falls), work is done, i.e., energy is transferred.

Ah, but what is direct contact? One electrostatic field pushing against another? If I touch something, it is the electrostatic fields pushing against each other. There is no direct contact!
