The name of a (not the) native American feather headdress is a warbonnet. There were many other headdresses with feathers that were not warbonnets - and many different kinds of cap, turban and headband without any feathers at all, or just with a few feathers.

If it were true that all native American tribes from the far north of Canada to the southern tip of South America wore Sioux-style war bonnets, the answer would be eagle feathers.

But it is certainly not true - in fact historically only a very small minority of native tribes wore that kind of headdress, and then only the most outstanding warriors were permitted to wear it.

Many different types of feather were worn by many different tribes in a very wide range of cultures. A well-known headdress worn by Hidatsa warriors of the Dog Soldier Society was made of hundreds of crow feathers with a crest of turkey feathers at the rear; a headdress worn by the Lakota Miwatani Society was made of owl feathers.

In South America, the colourful feathers of many strange and exotic birds were used in headddresses for both native men and women - eagles were not usually among these.
