Let's say the 'house' is a group of 50 or so. If they are all fighting amongst themselves, they won't be able to notice a different group of 50 coming to attack them until it's too late. They won't be able to stand up to the real enemy and fight.
So the main point is: You can't fight off the enemy if everyone is too busy fighting each other.
