Well, if you love your Betta fish, then it should live by itself. But if you add another Betta to your current Betta fish's tank, then they will start a fight because Betta Fish are Siamese fighting fish and if one Betta is in contact of another Betta, the possible reason would be a fight between them two.
Fighting fish (Betta splendens) are a slow moving and peacefull fish. They tend to be picked on by fin nipping species like some of the Barbs and are sometimes killed. If you only keep peacefull fish with a Betta, and your tank is large enough to house them, I see no reason why you should not keep a Betta in a community type aquarium.
Most fish get along well. However, do NOT mix betta fish with other fish. Not even another betta. You have to have a permit to have to betta fish in the same tank with eachother.
