The Sioux Indians (Teton, Yankton, and Santee) relied on the buffalo (American bison) for much of their food, clothing, and other supplies. Buffalo meat was pounded and dried to make wasna (pemmican) so that they could have meat during the winter when it was difficult to hunt. Sometimes dried fruits were pounded and added to the wasna. They also ate a soup made from chokecherries called wojapi.

Other meats available to the Sioux were bear, elk, deer, antelope, trout, rabbit, grouse, duck, and wild turkey. Other foods eaten by the Sioux include plums, chokecherries, maize (corn), wild turnip, wild rice, sage, sumac, dandelion, purslane, amaranth, and maple sugar.

Since the Sioux were nomadic, they usually were not able to plant crops. In order to get some foods, such as maize (corn), they would trade with other tribes. Otherwise, their foods were whatever they could find in the area they were in that was edible.
