Americans tend to eat a full meal for breakfast when they bother to eat that meal at all. They prefer sweet foods (fruit, pancakes, cereals) for their first meal of the day and tend to pair them with eggs and or meats (usually pork like bacon or sausage). They tend to have their smallest and most casual meal at lunch which can be a smaller version of a dinner meal but is more commonly a sandwich, some leftovers, soup, noodles or a yogurt and some fruit. Dinner is eaten pretty early compared to a lot of other nations. Americans prefer to eat dinner between 6-7pm. This is the biggest meal of the day and usually consists of meat (or other protein), a carb (potatoes, bread) and at least one vegetable (corn, peas, broccoli). Many Americans tend to drink soft drinks with their meals although a lot of parents insist on milk. And Americans tend to prefer large quantities of beverages, they can easily go through two or three 22oz cups of water, juice, soda or milk during a meal. Although in restaurants these contain a significant volume of ice. For a definitive answer, you would need to define your terms, "eating habits" and "Americans". "Eating habits" vary by the individual, and may be influenced by original nationality, personal preference, social status, economic position and region. American cuisine reflects the multitude of nationalities that make up her populace. When you consider that "French" fries are one of the most popular side dishes in America, I think you can see my point. Some of the most popular restaurants in America are: Italian, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, French, Portuguese, Spanish and Greek. When I think of American food I think of many dishes, not all of which are uniquely American. Cheeseburgers, hot dogs, fried chicken, submarine sandwiches (also called: subs, hoagies, grinders and heroes, depending on region) and pizza are some of the old standbys that can be found pretty much anywhere in the country. There are many regional dishes and cuisines that are mostly derived from the predominant nationalities that initially settled a given area. For example, French-Cajun in New Orleans, Italian in New York City and Grecian in the diners of New Jersey (Please note that these are broad generalizations to illustrate the point). This answer is but the tip of the proverbial iceberg but I hope it was helpful. The other side of the coin is the fact there is a high percentage of obese Americans living off of junk food and it's a National concern because it will lead to diseases such as stroke, heart attacks, diabetes is on the rise (even in young people) and a myriad of other health disorders. Canada is coming up close and heavy behind the Americans and obesity is also a problem. Between the U.S. and Canadian Governments they are making restaurants such at MacDonald's, etc., more responsible for the high fat, sugar and salt in their foods. Simply put, people need to wake up and shape up on their own!!!!
